We have more in common with Iran than Russia

BOOK REVIEW: Russia and Iran: Comrades in contradiction, 'Persian Dreams' by John W Parker, Reviewed by Ian Chesley, Asia Times, Dec 20, 2008

A review of a book that argues that America needs to recognize the realism that's evidenced in Russian and Iranian foreign policies and in their bilateral relationship.

The strange thing is, as it's suggested at the article's end, the overlap between America's strategic interests and Iran's is arguably larger than between America's and Russia's.

For more evidence of the overlap between our interests and Iran's, see what Gen. Petraeus - not exactly a lefty, give peace a chance, why can't we all just get along type - just said about how many common interests we share with Iran in Afghanistan. No, he doesn't advocate any sort of joint security measures, he leaves that to the politicians. *cough*cough*

The realism he (and many other military leaders) display, the understanding that even bitter rivals still may find areas - even strategic ones - of understanding is deeply refreshing. One can only wish more politicians were similarly realistic, and did not go for reflexive macho posturing so much.
