ARTICLE: Russia to Help Cuba Build Space Center, Reuters, September 17, 2008
Ah yes, our "ideological enemies." Boy, talk about putting lipstick on a pig!
Marginally competitive economic players tend to congregate--BFD.
But please, go all wobbly over this one too, confusing irritating friction (frisson?) with deep forces at work.
We need to focus on making ourselves as competitive as possible by becoming as resilient as possible. Obsessing over the marginals is a waste of time--infantile in a strategic sense.

Is it not time we stop rubbing the Cuban's face in the dirt with the embargo and give them some alternatives to their present system? They have not announced plans for a Russian nuclear plant as Chavez did recently, and they would surely have a greater need. Sounds like the Russian space center proposal is a safe way to get the attention of the US without too much provocation.

I would love to steal Cuba away from this crowd right now.
But you have to wait past this election for any decent moves.

Jeff, I agree. In fact, if I recall correctly it seems that lately Chavez keeps looking to Cuba for a nod of support and keeps getting snubbed from time to time. The Cubans very much seem to be taking a more pragmatic line these days, and the US would do well to act on it.
If there is to be a great power collaboration with Cuba on a space program, doesn't it seem that Cape Canaveral would be a lot closer to Havana? We can dream.
