Want to revive the Cold and abandon the Long?

POST: 'U.S., Saudi Arabia: Holding the Chechen Card,' Stratfor, August 14, 2008

A logical suggestion if you want to revive the Cold War and simultaneously abandon the war on terror, but I can't see having your pre-9/11 cake and eating it post-9/11.

The logic just collapses unless your goal is pretty much fighting with everybody.

While my feelings on Stratfor’s analysis are hot and cold, this piece just seems a little far fetched. This is Cold War thinking. I will not get in to the contradictions of claiming a “Global War on Terror” (which irks me) and then turning around and funding insurgents in the Caucasus. However, violence in the Caucasus has increased over the past two years, and the United States is better off leaving well enough alone. Why poke more holes in an already sinking ship? Violence in Kabardino-Balkaria and Ingushetia is already on the rise, and public discontent is growing. If the US needs Russia’s cooperation on many issues playing the “Chechen Card” will only be counterproductive to the US’ goals. Also, Kadyrov is quite ruthless in his counterinsurgency tactics, and is far more capable of dealing with any surge in militant activity.

Couldn't read it, but the free article they sent out comparing Georgia and Kosovo was informative.
