Putin, like Old Hickory

OP-ED: TNK-BP: something rotten in the state of Russia, By David Wighton, Times (London), July 25, 2008

Putin and company deciding to press harder on nationalizing the energy sector. Putin views energy like Andrew Jackson viewed American cotton in the 1830s: as a ticket to national power that must be maximized in its immediate impact. This guy feels he's building a nation back up from a humiliating collapse during which Russia gave and gave and seemingly got nothing in return. Look over Russian history and you will see several such storming-back recoveries from "times of troubles."

Yes and no. The article seems to describe a governmental situation in Russia that's as much out of Putin's control as anyone else's.

Putin long ago announced very publically that the "energy" sector was going to be managed as an arm of "national security." Like Hitler he has told people in advance what he is going to do and then when he does it there is surprise. Hope someone keeps up with his speeches and other utterings.
