ARTICLE: Defections to Fred Thompson Pose a Major Threat to McCain, By Matthew Mosk, Washington Post, June 8, 2007; Page A01
My impression and assumption all along, since everyone who seems attracted to him views him as the great Rudy alternative (Romney don't do it for most conservatives, and McCain just looks out of it). The question then, is, Does Thompson steal enough from both to create more support than Rudy's steady one-third?
Frankly, I saw Thompson on my man Larry Kudlow's show this week and was fairly unimpressed. He seems all soothing impression and virtually no stance whatsoever. I don't think you can win by promising merely to do nothing stupid or rash for four years, as attractive as that sounds right now. I'm just not seeing a Thompson world view, but merely a Thompson approach. People are going to want answers, not just negation. I sense a do-nothing-ism about him that he needs to dispel. Simply invoking Reagan and running as a non-Rudy won't be enough. Even running as a non-Hillary ain't enough. You gotta be somebody at the end of the day!

I'd love to hear your thoughts on Ron Paul.
Personally, any amount of invective and disdain I can muster when discussing his foreign policy ideas never seems sufficient.

Dear Sir,
Yes, at the end of the day. I have followed Mr. Thompson for quite a while and he does indeed have a very well developed political philosophy. Right now he is assessing the battlefield and finding out the caliber of the shells flying around. He reminds me of GWB. He lets the other guy shoot off his ammunition before he shows his hand. I suspect you will see the full man soon enough.

Fred Thompson does radio too, not just film. Possibly The Thompson Report he does for ABC radio will give you more insight into him.
His commentaries can be found at

Note: So far as I can tell, he writes his own stuff.

Yes, he does have to be somebody --- at the end of the day, as noted above. Right now, virtually the entire field, both sides, running as Not-Bush. So boring and wasted. Envision Fred standing back to avoid the label snowstorm going on right now. If he starts channeling PNM and BFA, even if he doesn't invite you in for a chat, and continues to show up on Kudlow and similars, that's enough of a "somebody" for me. Also, takes a "somebody" with some stance to stick it out in an MSM radio slot - just consider the granddaddy cheap shot artist, Daniel Schor, not to mention the model radio politician, RR.

I don't think you have to be somebody at the end of the day. Look at the collective somebodies that made up the Democratic party last November. They stood for "a new direction," (whatever that is), and ending the "culture of corruption" (with exception to the always-Honorable Democrat from Louisiana). They had no ideas. They were just Not Bush and Not Republican.
That was plenty to get them elected.
